Personal Care Worker
Carroll - Care worker - Indigenous Aboriginal

I identify as a proud Australian / Aboriginal woman and I’m aged in my 60s. I think I’ve had a life rich with experience, I grew up in what I call a different era, we were more mature back then, we had to be. I had my first child before I was 20 and my husband passed away not long after. We were taught to care and to have respect and we learnt from our experiences.

I try to bring everything I’ve learned in life to my role as a Personal Care Worker. I couldn’t be more enthusiastic with my work if I tried. Every day I go to work with a smile on my face and I always leave still smiling. The fact that I’ve had some hard times gives me empathy and that’s important too. I lost my mother recently and cared for her before she passed, I really valued that time. I think that’s given me a new perspective, I relate to people on a deeper level.

What I enjoy most about the job is having the chance to really connect with people. Sometimes when you talk about working in home care people assume it’s all about cleaning. There is that side of it but the most important thing to me is the conversation, it’s knowing that you’ve made someone’s day better and left them happy at the end of your time together. That you’ve really been there for them. What you give out, you get back too – it’s given me purpose in life.

I’m currently completing studies in dementia care, and I’d like to study more about mental health, it’s something I believe would really add value to my visits with clients.

I found my job by working with a Regional Workforce Coordinator from Skills Hubs, Anita in the Rockhampton region. Anita was awesome, she always kept in touch with me and helped me get into Aged Care support work. I’d recommend anyone who wants to do Aged Care support to go through Skills Hubs. I’m so happy I found them through my Facebook page.”
