What do I do?
I get the chance to bring comfort and compassion to people while also helping to manage their daily lives through support with the things they can no longer do. These can be things like:
- Providing support overnight to give respite when family carers go away
- Assistance with taking medication
- Getting dressed
- Sometimes feeding them
- Transporting and support for appointments and community activities
- Following Care Plans
- Showering
- Preparing meals
- Social visits for companionship
- Looking out for any changes in their health and wellbeing
- Washing and ironing
- House cleaning
- Shopping
What do I enjoy about being a personal care worker
Being able to work different hours and balance it with my studies. I enjoy meeting new people and hearing about their lives. We have some special moments and good laughs. Sometimes I’m the only person they’ve seen all day and I know I’m making a real difference, that feels good.
A day at work
8:30AM Drive to Mrs Smith’s house, where I start my day by helping her get out of bed and showered and dressed for the day. Make breakfast and chat about her family, give her daily medication to take, before putting on the dishwasher and tidying up.
10:00AM Drive to Mrs Walkers and put on the laundry, clean the bathrooms and vacuum the floors. Make her lunch. Pick flowers from the garden to put in a vase to brighten her day.
1:00PM Pick up Mr Kelly and take him out for a visit with a friend, and then shopping together for food for the week. Unpack the shopping and fold some washing. Cook dinner and check he has taken his daily tablets.
4:00PM Sign off for the day and catch an early movie with a friend.
