Meet Kerry, one of over 2,300 people we’ve placed into meaningful employment within the Aged Care sector
One of my clients is a gentleman living with Alzheimer’s, who also use to work in the travel industry. We had an instant connection when we first met. We laugh together constantly and share stories of our travel days, often over coffee at a local café and sometimes, I take him to the local airport, just to watch the planes fly in. You can see his face light up and it makes my day. While we’re out it gives his wife a break and helps her day a little too.
Not all of our clients are lucky enough to have families around them, and some need much more assistance than others but a common factor is so many are isolated. Often, I might be the only face they see all week – it’s so good to see their smiles as I walk through the door and to know that for at least a little while they feel connected and supported.
The work we do is so important, it allows people to stay in the familiarity, comfort and safety of their own home as they get older, with help to do the things they can’t do for themselves anymore. It gives families a chance for respite and just makes life easier.
We need so many more workers in the industry – the baby boomers are about to hit, and they’ll need our help. New workers will need help to transition into the industry just like I did.
Skills Hubs helped me get my first interview, offered help with the application and training process, and kept checking in on me to see what other help they could offer. Their support saw me through my initial doubts and allowed me to be where I am today – in a job that I love, knowing I’m making a difference.”
